Is an In-Home or Studio Newborn Session Right for You?

Often times soon-to-be parents know they want photos of their newborn, but they aren’t sure if they would prefer an in-home or studio newborn session. I truly love both options, so I’m going to try to break it down a bit to help you make the best decision for your family!

In-Home Sessions
In-home sessions are a wonderful way to document your new family dynamics and routines once baby arrives. While these sessions will work for anyone, they are especially great if you have a good amount of window light, you prefer more candid, interactive photos instead of looking at the camera, and you want to document real life so you can remember these first days, even if it isn’t perfect! We typically make use of the family room, master bedroom, and nursery, and I am totally open to photographing baby’s first bath, nursing images, or anything else you would like! I do bring along a couple of wraps so we can take some simple swaddled images, or we can use yours.

An in-home newborn session works well too when you have other children, who might be a little more difficult to contain in a studio environment. Keeping them in your home where they are already comfortable might make them a little more cooperative, and they can play in between taking photos. I also love documenting the older sibling on their own, in their own spaces, with their favourite things – it makes them feel special too!

In-home sessions lend themselves particularly well to albums. Albums are a beautiful way of sharing all the images that tell the story of a day in the life with your little one. Imagine looking through it with them when they are older, and telling them all about those first few weeks.

Studio Sessions
Studio sessions are great if you prefer a minimalist style with simple backgrounds. If you would like to have images of your babe asleep and professionally posed, then a studio session is definitely the way to go. I do always aim to get some photos with baby’s eyes open as well, and we will also get mom, dad, and siblings in some too!

If you love the studio props, dainty headbands, adorable bonnets, and simple backgrounds, this might be the option for you! I keep my set-ups very simple and as timeless as possible, with the focus on your little one.

Studio sessions make beautiful albums as well, of course, and there are a number of wall art options that will display your images either individually, or as a small collection.
