If you’re baby is about to turn one, Whitby & Oshawa cake smash photography in my studio is a great way to celebrate baby’s first birthday with some super cute photos!
Cake smash sessions are done in my Oshawa studio, which is very close to Whitby, convenient for anyone in the Durham Region, and just 30 minutes east of Toronto.
About the Cake Smash Set
I provide very simple and minimalistic sets for cake smash sessions, in the form of solid colour seamless backdrops. We can then add a banner, greenery, or balloons if you wish, but this way the focus remains on your little one! And no need to worry about the backdrop being ruined – it’s just a giant roll of paper, so it can be cut off and discarded, and rolled out again for the next session!

What If My Baby Doesn’t Like the Cake?
While you may often only see the smiling, happy, cake-eating babies on social media, it’s not unusual for a baby to dislike the taste or texture of the cake, especially if they are trying it for the first time! Don’t worry though, I have a few tricks up my sleeve to allow us to still get adorable photos of your little one with their cake, even if we have to make a bit of the mess ourselves ;)
Of course there are babies that absolutely love it too! And this is when we get those face-first dives into the cake, icing up the nose and in the eyelashes, handfuls and feetfuls of cake, and giant messes on the floor. When this happens it makes for great photos, but don’t put any pressure on yourself or your baby to perform. Whatever happens, happens. Each baby reacts differently and it can be difficult to predict even what your own little one will do!

Planning Your Oshawa Cake Smash Photography Session at my Studio
When you reach out to me to inquire about a cake smash session, I’ll ask you for some details on what you’re envisioning. If your vision aligns with the options I provide, then we can pick a date and start planning the details!
Typically we’ll choose a backdrop colour, a simple decor item, and a theme for the cake. I’m partial to a “naked cake” to keep with the complicity theme, but we can also add a bit of colour in there too.
Learning from my mistakes when I first started out, we’ll avoid chocolate cake, and red icing. That is just not the vibe we are going for here! So white cake, with white (or mostly white) icing is what photographs best. The icing is simple buttercream, as fondant is too tough for little one’s to break through. There’s a great cake place around the corner from me that is convenient place to order the smash cake from. You can handle that yourself if your little one has any allergy concerns, or leave it to me so it’s one less thing to worry about on the day of your session!

What Do I Do With My Cake-Covered Baby After?
I have an oversized sink in my laundry room right next to the studio, along with some baby wash, and a fresh towel. Once the cake smashing is done, we’ll carry your little one to the sink for a quick bath so you can get them dressed again and not get their clothes and car seat covered in icing and crumbs!

What Should My Baby Wear?
Some parents just let their kid loose on the cake in nothing but a diaper! Others go for a simple white onesie, or one in a colour that coordinates with baby’s room, or other photos we’ve done together.
I have a few outfits available in the studio that you are welcome to use as well, or you can find something inexpensive online such as these:
Lacy romper
Gender neutral outfit with “One”
Tutu Dress with headband
Shorts romper with bow tie
What Do People Do With the Photos?
My favourite way to display these images is in a collage featuring 9 of your favourites in a beautiful frame! I can design some options for you and you can choose a frame from the samples in my studio.
If you prefer one larger image, we can do that too! Or if your baby was super into the cake smashing and we have enough images for an album, that is also a super cute memento for their first birthday
If you also had a newborn and/or sitter session with me, we can combine your favourite images from all the sessions into one collage frame. Such a sweet way to remember how much they changed throughout their first year!
