This lovely mama and I used to work together at the Pickering Town Centre fresh out of high school. She has been my go-to person whenever I need an assistant, and her oldest baby was one of the first that I photographed! He isn’t too fond of my camera these days, but it’s amazing what kind of smiles you can get out of him when he’s throwing crab apples mere inches from your head ;)

You may also recognize this family from the little video on the front page of my site! They were sweet enough to let my friend Jennifer come along and get some video of what a session with me can look like. You can even see Max’s progression from “not into it” to actual genuine smiles. I love that. I want the kids to have fun during our time together, and we’ll play games, have contests, throw things at my head, whatever it takes to create connection in a real way.

This mama helped me test out some new lighting and wardrobe pieces with her cute little bump! She was so excited for the arrival of her baby boy, and he is absolutely perfect as you can see HERE.

I’ve had the honour of photographing both these little ones as wee babes, and a couple family sessions as well. This latest session was to celebrate Miss V’s first birthday. I gotta say though, it was hard not to let big brother W steal the show.

For this Whitby family session, I knew I wanted to use those gorgeous birch trees as a back drop, and I brought along the birch prop my Dad built, since V wasn’t quite walking yet, to give us some extra options. I also knew that attention spans would be short, and wanted to focus on creating some fun images, and lots of connection.

It was so much fun documenting this sweet family as they baked (and ate!) batches of beautiful Christmas cookies! The girls’ aprons were seriously adorable, and so were they! I like to imagine them showing these images to their own children 20-30 years from now, as the tradition passes through another generation.

Last month a couple of friends and I ventured out on a road trip to Chicago to learn from three of the best photographers in the industry at the Colossal workshop. I’ve been in photography in some capacity for nearly 15 years now, and lately I’ve been feeling a little bit like I’m just going through the motions and not pushing myself to try new things anymore, plus I’m always looking for tips on how to improve my workflow and business practices as well, as so much has changed since I first started.

One of the instructors was the fabulous Alli Peck from BC. She taught us a single light set-up for maternity, and her session flow to get multiple looks in less time. I actually had the opportunity to see Alli in the fall at another conference, and I passed it up because I was more excited about newborn and family photography at the time, but I’m SO glad I got another chance to see her.

I was feeling inspired, so I had this lovely lady join me for a studio maternity session where I tried out some of the techniques I had just learned.

And don’t forget to follow me on Instagram, I tend to post there most often these days, and there will be a few more images from this session up there in the next few days.

Whether you need a classic headshot, or a variety of images to showcase your personality and your business, I can help!
Personal branding photography sessions are perfect for entrepreneurs that want a steady flow of consistent imagery for their website, Facebook, and Instagram accounts, and the cell phone photos aren’t quite cutting it. Lifestyle and product shots help round out your website and social media content so your clients get a better idea of what you do

Together we will plan out the types of images that will complement your business. This can include formal headshots, casual headshots, photos of you, your workspace, your products, lifestyle images showcasing you, your product, or the people that use your services, and even flatlays. We can even leave plenty of negative space in case you want to add in text overlays or graphics, or crop the images differently for different uses.

I had the opportunity to connect with one of my favourite newborn and family clients, Gillian Buckley, and her husband Adam, for a personal branding session recently. Between the two of them, they run a few different businesses, and we spent a couple hours together creating images they can use on their websites, bios, social media accounts, and anywhere else they are needed!

The majority of the images we created in this personal branding session will be used to promote Gillian’s yoga and mindfulness practices. We wanted to focus on keeping things fairly bright, inviting, and non-intimidating, so students would know what to expect when coming to a class. We even used to studio space where she teaches for some of the images.

If you’re an entrepreneur in the Durham Region and interested in a session like this for yourself, please use the contact form in the menu above, and let me know what you do!

Often times soon-to-be parents know they want photos of their newborn, but they aren’t sure if they would prefer an in-home session or a studio session. I truly love both options, so I’m going to try to break it down a bit to help you make the best decision for your family!

                In-Home Sessions
In home sessions are a wonderful way to document your new family dynamics and routines once baby arrives. While these sessions will work for anyone, they are especially great if you have a good amount of window light, you prefer more candid, interactive photos instead of looking at the camera, and you want to document real life so you can remember these first days, even if it isn’t perfect! We typically make use of the family room, master bedroom, and nursery, and I am totally open to photographing baby’s first bath, nursing images, or anything else you would like! I do bring along a couple of wraps so we can take some simple swaddled images, or we can use yours.

An in-home newborn session works well too when you have other children, who might be a little more difficult to contain in a studio environment. Keeping them in your home where they are already comfortable might make them a little more cooperative, and they can play in between taking photos. I also love documenting the older sibling on their own, in their own spaces, with their favourite things – it makes them feel special too!

In-home sessions lend themselves particularily well to albums. Albums are a beautiful way of sharing all the images that tell the story of a day in the life with your little one. Imagine looking through it with them when they are older, and telling them all about those first few weeks.

                Studio Sessions
Studio sessions are great if you prefer a minimalist style with simple backgrounds. If you would like to have images of your babe asleep and professionally posed, then a studio session is definitely the way to go. I do always aim to get some photos with baby’s eyes open as well, and we will also get mom, dad, and siblings in some too!

If you love the studio props, dainty headbands, adorable bonnets, and simple backgrounds, this might be the option for you! I keep my set-ups very simple and as timeless as possible, with the focus on your little one.

Studio sessions make beautiful albums as well, of course, and there are a number of wall art options that will display your images either individually, or as a small collection.

                Still can’t decide?
Ask me about a special rate when doing both!

I have photographed this lovely family a few times before, so I was super excited when they contacted me to schedule a Christmas tree farm family session. I followed them along on their adventure at Blackstock Tree Farm, searching for the perfect tree, and some hilarious moments that arose when their son hopped on the top of the tree as dad was dragging it back through the farm.

It’s feels so wonderful to document natural interactions and events and know that this family will be able to look back on this tradition years from now, when their son is grown up and starting traditions with his own family. As a child I remember certain traditions so fondly, and being able to recreate them with my own son, and seeing everything through his eyes, is definitely one of the highlights of being a parent.

I always seem to over-shoot with these guys, and this day was no exception, so here are a bunch of my faves from the day!
